A patient uses a hand-held machine which provides a visual and audible signal showing the amount of energy being used by a particular muscle. The patient then can attempt to control the muscle by either a higher contraction, or relaxation. This is very effective at rebuilding muscle damaged by surgery, trauma, or denervation.
